In der Sammlung des Museums der Stadt New York habe ich diese Aufnahmen von New Yorker Kindern entdeckt, die vermutlich schon vor mehr als 120 Jahren entstanden sind. Wie lange diese Menschen, die hier zu Beginn ihres Lebens aufgenommen wurden, schon wieder verstorben sind, kann man nur vermuten.

Ein Teil der Aufnahmen stammen von dem berühmten Fotografen Jacob Rijs, der im 19. Jahrhundert die Situation der Menschen in den Elendsvierteln von Manhattan eindrucksvoll dokumentierte.
