Normandie Movie



Ich komme irgendwie noch nicht von der Normandie los, die am vergangenen Sonntag im Mittelpunkt eines Beitrags stand. Auf der Facebook-Seite von NYHG hat ein Leser namens Alan Heath einen interessanten englischsprachigen Kommentar und einen Film mit bewegten Bildern von der S.S. Normandie hinterlassen. Danach zu suchen habe ich vergangene Woche glatt vergessen.

Alan Heath's History Page The Normandie was a luxury French liner which had found itself in New York when France collapsed. It was being converted to a troop ship when it caught fire on 9 February 1942 and sank as a result. The fire was caused by accident as sparks from welding caught fire and then ignited inflammable materials. There was an efficient fire fighting system on board but it was disconnected during the conversion process. However such was the paranoia about spies and the underworld, the feeling was that it could have been caused by a Nazi sympathiser or by the mafia. The result of the Normandie fire was to increase co-operation between the US authorities and organised crime which lead to further and deeper co-operation between the two at the time of the invasion of Sicily.
