Jewish Cemetery, Chatham Square, from the collections of the museum of the city of New York
Auf der Suche nach einem inhaltlichen Gegengewicht zum vorletzten Beitrag bin ich auf dieses alte Foto gestoßen, das einen kleinen jüdischen Friedhof in der Nähe des Chatham Squares zeigt.
Es handelt sich dabei um den "Chatham Square Cemetery" oder auch "First Shearith Israel Graveyard".
Man findet ihn im Süden von Manhattan an der Adresse 55-57 St. James Place. Es soll sich dabei um das einzige Bauwerk in Manhattan aus dem 17. Jahrhundert handeln, das bis heute erhalten geblieben ist.
Ich habe mal im Bromley-Stadtatlas von 1891 nachgeschlagen, ob man dort den Friedhof finden kann. Die Straße "St. James Place" hieß damals noch "New Bowery":
Kurz bevor die New Bowery auf den Chatham Square trifft, sieht man auf der rechten Straßenseite eine Lücke zwischen den Gebäuden, die mit "Graveyard" beschriftet ist. Das dürfte der Chatham Square Cemetery sein, zumal die räumliche Nähe zum Chatham Square unbestritten vorhanden ist.
Die Bildbeschreibung zur nachfolgenden Photographie verrät uns, dass es sich bei dem Chatham Square Cemetery um den ältesten jüdischen Friedhof der Vereinigten Staaten handelt, als Datum wird hier 1656 genannt. Auf dieser Abbildung sieht man auch, dass seinerzeit die Hochbahntrasse der Third Avenue Elevated Railway direkt am Friedhof vorbeigeführt hat.

Es folgen zwei weitere "Außenansichten" des Friedhofs, auf dem seinerzeit offenbar Juden spanischer und portugiesischer Herkunft begraben wurden.

Das dazugehörige Gotteshaus steht übrigens einige Kilometer weiter nördlich an der Westseite des Central Parks, um genau zu sein an der Mündung der 70th Street in die Central Park West.

Zu allerletzt werfe ich noch kurz den Google Street View-Mann am Chatham Square ab, der von dort in südliche Richtung in die St. James Place hineinblickt und links den Friedhof erkennt.
