McKim, Mead and White, Pennsylvania Station, 1904-1910, from the collection of the museum of the city of New York
Ich habe mal wieder Lust darauf, den schönsten überirdischen Großbahnhof von New York in Erinnerung zu rufen, der nicht mehr vorhanden ist. Von 1910 bis 1963 war die klassische Pennsylvania Station an der Ecke 33rd Street / 7th Avenue in Betrieb, danach wurde der überirdische Teil abgerissen, der Bahnhof (bis heute) in den Untergrund verfrachtet und darauf die vierte Version des Madison Square Gardens gebaut (ebenfalls bis heute in Betrieb).

Und hier sehen wir die Pennsylvania Station etwa vier Jahre nach ihrer Eröffnung. Dort, wo man hier noch im Vordergrund eine Baugrube sieht, entstand wenig später bis zum Jahr 1919 das Hotel Pennsylvania, später Stadler genannt und Namensgeber für einen der beiden alten Zausel auf dem Balkon der Muppet Show).

Und zum Abschluss noch eine gute Handvoll jener Fotos von Berenice Abbott aus dem Jahr 1936, die die alte Penn Station nahezu unsterblich haben werden lassen.
