Heute geht es erneut sehr weit zurück in der photographisch dokumentierten Stadtgeschichte von New York City. Vor 160 Jahren schulterte der Photograph Victor Prevost seine Kamera und nahm im Umfeld von New York City zahlreiche Bilder von Häusern auf, die einen Eindruck von der gerade entstehenden Metropole vermitteln: Holzhäuser, Stadthäuser, Steinhäuser, Ziegelhäuser. Es ist davon auszugehen, dass die abgebildeten Gebäude schon lange nicht mehr vorhanden sind und die Grundstücke schon einmal oder auch mehrfach überbaut wurden. Leider ist bei den meisten Aufnahmen nicht hinterlegt, wo sie entstanden sind. Deshalb kann man über die Orte nur spekulieren. Dennoch sind das wunderbare und vor allem in ihrer Alltäglichkeit einzigartige Dokumente aus einem schon lange verschwundenen New York City. Die Bilder stammen aus der Sammlung des Museums der Stadt New York.

Dieses Gebäude im Gothic Revival-Stil scheint dem Fotografen besonders gut gefallen zu haben, ihm hat er sogar drei Aufnahmen gewidmet.

Es folgen drei Aufnahmen mit "Row Houses", wie übersetzt man das? Straßenhäuser? Stadthäuser? Oder vielleicht Reihenhäuser? Bei der dritten Aufnahme war die Information hinterlegt, dass sie in Midtown Manhattan entstanden ist.

Hier sehen wir auch ein Steinhaus, damals noch eine eher seltene Erscheinung.

Diese Aufnahme soll in der Nähe der 94th Street entstanden sein, ich nehme mal an, es ist die in Manhattan gemeint. Darunter ist auch das Heim eines Dr. Valentine Mott:

Neben Häusern hat der Fotograf auch noch einige Schiffe als Motiv ausgewählt, so wie hier den Raddampfer S.S. Metropolis.

Die Metropolis wurde 1854 in Betrieb genommen, war also zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme nagelneu.
Im Trockendock sehen wir die Commonwealth, ebenfalls ein Dampfschiff, das durch ein seitlich angebrachtes Schaufelrad angetrieben und 1854 in Betrieb genommen wurde.

Auf dieser Panoramaaufnahme vom New Yorker Hafen sieht man unter anderem das Dampfschiff "S.S. Elm City", das in der rechten Bildhälfte nahe der Bildmitte vor Anker liegt.

Und mit der Aufnahme eines nicht namentlich genannten Segelschiffs im Trockendock endet die Reise zurück zum New York der Jahre 1853 und 1854.
